B.A.S.S. - the Band Analysis and Suggestion System...

is a project based on data crawled from mySpace.com. The current developer team consists of three students of the University of applied Sciences Kaiserslautern / Zweibrücken. The project was developed for the course "Media Management and Production"
The main goal of the project is to analyze and visualize the social network of the registered bands at mySpace. In order to do that we developed a crawler that crawled about 440.000 bands and about 30.000.000 band to band relations. Based on that data we developed a program with three main components:

Visualization

The main goal of the Visualization component is to visualize a bands surroundings. The current version uses java3d to generate a three-dimensional view of a band, its friends and the friends friends.

Suggestion

This component generates a list of bands the user might also like based on one or more input bands. This list is generated based on the frequency of occurrence of the bands on the input bands friendlist(s) and on their friendlists. It is also pretty interesting to compare the connection between a bands social networks to a bands musical surroundings.

Statistics

The statistics component offers a variety of charts and tables such as some top100s, comparisons of the different genres, a hype curve, etc..
